Based on a wealth of personal testimonies, this poignant assortment of archive footage brings the 'Nesjomme', the soul of pre-war Jewish Amsterdam, to life via the story of the young woman Rusha.
Between World Wars I and II, one in ten inhabitants of Amsterdam was Jewish. Mingling fiction and history, this documentary tells their story, illustrated by archive footage and the fictitious story of Rusha and her family and friends. The result is a dynamic representation of Amsterdam during the interbellum period, as seen from the perspective of the Jewish community. While Rusha grows up from a young girl to an independent woman, her optimism is gradually tested. The eruption of World War II presents her with an impossible choice. |
